Clean Burning Candles: What That Actually Means

What is a clean burning candle?

A clean burning candle is designed to burn evenly and efficiently, producing minimal soot and smoke. This is influenced by the type of wax used, the quality of the fragrance blend, and correct wick sizing.

Are soy candles better for indoor air quality?

Soy candles are plant-based and burn at a lower temperature than paraffin candles. When properly formulated, they tend to produce less visible soot, making them a popular choice for people looking to reduce indoor air pollutants.

Why does wax choice matter?

Paraffin wax is petroleum-derived. Plant-based waxes such as soy, coconut, and beeswax are renewable and biodegradable, and are commonly chosen for cleaner, more stable burns.

Do clean burning candles still smell strong?

Yes. A clean burn does not mean weak scent. High-quality fragrance blends and proper wax formulation allow scent to disperse evenly without overwhelming the space.

How does Wildfound approach clean candle making?

Wildfound candles are poured in small batches using plant-based wax blends, eco wicks, and IFRA-compliant fragrance oils. Each candle is tested to ensure an even, reliable burn in real home environments.

DEEP DIVE FAQ

Why do you use plant wax?

We chose plant-based wax because it performs cleanly, no petrochemicals, no questionable blends. Plant wax naturally creates micro-crystals as it cools, which is why you sometimes see a frosted texture on the glass or surface. It's completely normal and actually a clear sign of pure, unmodified wax.

It burns slower, cleaner, and carries fragrance better naturally, without needing additives we don’t believe in.

What makes your fragrance blends “premium”?

Our blends are defined by rigorous ingredient standards and meticulous formulation. We use IFRA-compliant, phthalate-free, and paraben-free fragrance oils chosen for their superior performance and safety.

Every scent is consciously chosen and formulated with the intention of achieving the optimal balance between exceptional fragrance performance and the lowest potential for sensitivity. This dedication starts with taking our time to choose the right suppliers, and is cemented through months of rigorous testing to ensure both clarity and longevity in every unique blend.

Do you use wicks with lead cores?

Absolutely not. We are committed to a clean, non-toxic burn from start to finish.

We exclusively use naturally coated cotton wicks and sustainably sourced wooden wicks. These choices ensure our candles are lead-free and zinc-free, which supports a purer burn and better fragrance diffusion. The natural materials are made wonderfully for our plant-based wax formulations.

How is Wildfound Committed to Ethical Sourcing?

Wildfound is deeply committed to ethical and conscious sourcing.

Our jar candle collection and fragrance melts, with the exception of Sea Salted Honey Wax Melts, are 100% Plant Wax, Soy + Coconut blends, and fully Vegan, using a renewable, biodegradable blend. Our fragrance oils contain no animal-derived ingredients, and will never be tested on animals.

Our Sea Salted Honey Wax Melts are currently our standalone product that contains a Natural Beeswax Blend. The specific wax type (Soy, Coconut, Beeswax) is always clearly detailed by the feature icons on every product page.

What about allergens?

Fragrance allergens are naturally present in many essential oils and aromatic compounds. To ensure the highest safety, we exclusively use fragrance oils that are IFRA-compliant and adhere to strict EU regulations.

Our commitment is to full transparency: we clearly list all regulated allergens (those above 0.01%) on our product packaging. We also offer complete access to the full Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for every product.

Packaging + footprint

Our glass candle jars are high grade, durable and designed for optimum candle performance. Our printing partner is FSC® certified. We believe the quality is in the details, at every point.

We prioritise biodegradable, recyclable packaging and avoid plastics at all costs. For certain, delicate or abstract candles, it may be unavoidable for protection. Our goal is minimal waste, low impact and we're dedicated to putting this into practice everday.

Our 'No' list

We have a lot more 'donts' than 'dos'

  • No lead
  • No heavy metals or industrial solvents
  • No paraffin
  • No phthalates
  • No cheap oils or unregulated suppliers
  • No unregulated fragrance suppliers.
  • No additives
  • No artificial dyes or colourants
  • No Benzene
  • No Toluene
What about artificial dyes or colourants?

We strongly reject common, harmful, petroleum-based artificial dyes found in many mass-produced candles. Unlike cheap alternatives that use petroleum-derived dyes, which can release harmful VOCs when burned, our choice of ingredients aligns with our goal of a cleaner burning formula.

  • All Candle Jars: Contain 0 dyes, no colorant added.
  • Limited Editions: We create a very small batch of seasonal, decorative, geometric candles. These may feature non-toxic eco chips and hand-painted, simplistic details using non-toxic, water-based liquid beeswax candle pens. The quality and concentration of these colorants are so high that they make up less than 0.01% of the finished product.

Rest assured, none of our products contain artificial dyes. Every ingredient is fully listed on the product page.

Why is the surface sometimes textured or frosted?

This is a beautiful and completely natural characteristic of high-quality plant waxes like soy and coconut, it's often called 'frosting' or 'bloom'.

It happens when the natural oils crystallise after the candle cools or after the first burn. This is a sign that you are burning a pure, natural wax and it does not affect the candle's performance, scent throw, or burn quality whatsoever.

Our goal was to make the candles we always wanted, and didn't know we needed.

Because we experience the difference every day, we felt compelled to share it.

Our mission has been clear from the start, kinder burning candles, without compromising on the magic of unforgettable scent experiences.

We're proud to finally share our creations, through processes of rigorous trials, learning, and always choosing quality over convenience.
